Do you want to register a .com but don’t know which registrar to choose, or has the pricing of different registrars confused you? Here, we’ve shared the list of the six registrars you can use.
Why .com? Although over 400 extensions are available for registration, it is the most popular TLD. According to Verisign, around 340 million domains were registered in 2021. Out of the 340 million extensions, around 173 million Dot Com + Dot Net TLDs were registered in 2021. Dot com’s share of 173 million would be bigger.
Although you can register TLDs on any registrar you find on the internet, .com is affordable if you register the TLD with the cheapest registrar, or it can cost over 15 dollars if you go with registrars other than the ones we’ve shared below.
Namecheap
Namecheap is one of the registrars we often use to transfer or register domains. These are three reasons why we use it – affordable pricing, excellent support, and good UI. NC has a well-designed dashboard and an intuitive domain finder utility. On its homepage, you’ll always find live money-saving deals.
How much does .com cost on NC? On sale days, new users can register this TLD on Namecheap for around 7 dollars, and on Black Friday sale days, the price of this TLD drops further. Is the sale organized for new users only? No, anyone can participate in the Namecheap Black Friday sale. The best time to get a .com or any other TLD on NC is when the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals go live. You can grab the .com for 7 to 8 dollars on other days.
GoDaddy
GoDaddy is the most popular registrar in the world. It manages more TLDs and ccLTDs than Namecheap. The service and interface of GoDaddy are top-class, and the pricing is also affordable. If you register a domain for more than a year with GoDaddy, you’ll save money as the company will charge just 2 to 3 dollars for the 1st year. However, if you register your domain for a year, you will have to pay 2 to 3 dollars extra on GD. GoDaddy’s interface is easy to use, and the company lets you complete the transaction using various payment methods.
Cloudflare
After adding the domain section to the Cloudflare dashboard, the CDN service provider offered a .com/.net/.org transfer service for a few years. CF now lets users register domains. While Namecheap or GoDaddy support discount codes and organize a sale often, Cloudflare has never held a sale.
To register a domain with CF, sign in to the CF dashboard and click the “Registrar” option. Now fill in the textbox you see on the page with the extension you want to register and click the search icon. CF will now display a list of extensions along with the pricing. Click the purchase option to complete the transaction. Cloudflare charges ICANN fees only, and its domain registration charges are among the best in the industry. You can buy a .com from it for 8.57 dollars only.
Namesilo
Namesilo is not as popular as GoDaddy and Namecheap but has excellent pricing. The registrar is ICANN approved as well. The interface of Namesilo looks outdated but boasts several options. NS has an excellent rating of 4.75 on Trustpilot. A .com on NS costs 9.95 dollars. The registrar will offer a $1 discount on this TLD if you use a coupon code while checking out. After applying the coupon, you can get TLD for 9 dollars only. Namesilo supports 150 payment methods.
Porkbun
Porkbun is a fast-growing company with one of the best domain registration rates. Not many companies we’ve shared on this page charge the same fees for .com registration and renewal, but Porkbun does. In addition to Porkbun, Cloudflare has the same pricing for renewing and registering a domain. This registrar has an excellent rating of 4.6+ on Facebook and 4.7+ on Google from thousands of users. It currently charges 9.13 for .com registration.
Hostgator
Many people know HostGator as a hosting company. The company offers other services too. For example, you can register a TLD or ccTLD with HostGator. HG sells the most popular TLD for 7.95 dollars only. The other registrars we’ve shared above will hide your whois details for free, but with HostGator, the whois information will be visible unless you select the domain privacy option while registering your domain. The price for the same is around 14 dollars. If you don’t bother about your information appearing in the WHOIS lookup tools, HostGator is a good option for you.
Some of the features of the registrars we’ve covered above:
Free privacy: Excluding HostGator, domain privacy protection is available for free on other registrars. If privacy protection isn’t enabled/active, any internet user who wants to know more about the website owner will use the WHOIS lookup tool. The tool shows the name, address, and contact number of the person who owns the .com.
Two-factor authentication: Namecheap, Nameslio, Porkbun, and GoDaddy support phone/app-based two-factor authentication.
URL forwarding: The registrars let users forward URLs for free.
Marketplace: Finding a good memorable .com is like finding a needle in a haystack. If you find and register a TLD that, according to domain appraisal tools, is worth hundreds of dollars, you can sell the .com on the registrar’s marketplace. Cloudflare and HostGator don’t have a marketplace yet.
Other services: Most companies we’ve shared above offer more than one service. For instance, you can buy hosting from Porkbun, HostGator, GoDaddy, Namecheap, and Namesilo and enable free CDN on Cloudflare. If you choose a company carefully, you won’t have to manage multiple accounts.
Some useful .com registration tips:
- If you don’t want to change registrar often, pick one that charges the same fee for .com renewal and registration.
- To save money, you can switch to another registrar a week before the TLD expires.
- Always keep the domain in a locked state. Unlock it only while transferring it.
