GeneratePress vs Blocksy

GeneratePress’s rating on WordPress.org proves how great the theme is. It emerged as a great alternative to dozens of popular premium WordPress themes a few months after its launch. It is one of the top 5 templates in the WordPress repository.

Blocksy isn’t as popular as GP, but its user base is increasing daily. As it is an easy-to-customize WP template with plenty of options, many people consider it a good alternative to GeneratePress.

If you’ve shortlisted these two templates and would like to use one of them on your site, go through the following paragraphs where we’ve discussed the various features of the two templates.

Menu

Blocksy lets you design/customize the header with a drag-and-drop editor, and it displays the menu over the existing layout instead of pushing it down. GeneratePress menu will shift down the content below the header. Its premium version supports the off-canvas menu. GP doesn’t have a drag-and-drop editor like Blocksy. However, it lets you change the navigation location and includes several header presets. GP supports these five navigation locations:

  • Below the header, above header, float right.
  • Float right, left-sidebar, right-sidebar, no navigation.

GeneratePress also comes with six header presets – default, classic, navigation before/after/left. Blocksy’s header designer is similar to the Astra header builder. When the header builder is active, you can put the items displayed on the left side of the editor to the header. When you choose an item, the header builder will highlight the places where you can put this item.

Blocksy Premium edition has an enhanced header builder, advanced menu (megamenu), and more header elements than its free version. GP Premium supports mobile header, secondary navigation, and off-canvas navbar.

Theme Builder

The developer of the GeneratePress theme has built and launched a page builder for GP called GenerateBlocks. GenerateBlocks is available for download in the WordPress plugin repository. Users can design and create new pages for their sites with it. The page builder includes dynamic block elements. According to its developer, Blocksy is fully compatible with the Gutenberg editor. It also supports Elementor and Elementor alternative page builders such as Brizy, and Beaver builder.

Color customization

GeneratePress has more color customization options than Blocksy. Its color options are grouped into the following ten categories:

  • Body, header, primary navigation, navigation search.
  • Buttons, content, forms, sidebar widgets, and footer bar.

In Blocksy, you can change the color of the h1 to h6 heading tags, links, borders, base color (text), and the site’s background color.

Post styles

GP Premium lets users design posts with the help of the hook system. It doesn’t provide GUI options for customizing the single post page. GP Premium supports grid/masonry layouts. It can also show posts on archive pages in a column layout and add an infinite scroll feature to the archive pages.

Blocksy includes four single post styles. It shows options to show or hide the featured image, share box, post navigation links, author box, related posts, comments, post tags, etc in the WordPress live customizer. It supports these five archive layouts – simple, classic, grid, enhanced grid, and Gutenberg. You can customize the appearance of cards and change the number of columns it should display on the archive page. The archive pages can or cannot have a sidebar in these two templates.

Footer

GeneratePress supports two footer widths – full and contained. It also enables you to set the inner footer width to contained or full width. A footer in this WordPress theme can have up to 4 columns. It can have a back to top button as well. If you want more control over the footer design, you can use GenerateBlocks. GB lets users build custom footers. It lets users adjust the space around footer elements and allows you to set the background color, change the text color, etc.

Blocksy’s footer builder boasts three rows. Each row can have a different layout. You can change the column/widget/row vertical spacing in the template and hide/show a row on a phone/tablet/desktop. In GeneratePress, you cannot set a divider for the widgets/footer, but you can do so in its counterpart. Blocksy enables you to add a border/divider for footer rows/columns. Users can configure it to hide/show a divider/border on mobile devices or desktops.

Sidebars

GeneratePress free edition only lets you set a left/right sidebar for the page or post. It can also hide the sidebar on the archive or single post page. In GP Premium, you can change the sidebar’s width. Blocksy features a bunch of sidebar options and four sidebar styles. You can change the vertical spacing of widgets appearing on the sidebar and set a width for the sidebar or the gap between the elements. You can also change the sidebar widget font title, font family, font color, etc, and build custom sidebars with this theme.

Performance and speed: GeneratePress and Blocksy are fast themes. Their page speed score is above 70.

Library: The Premium version of the two WP templates lets users import, use or redesign the starter sites.

Pricing

CreativeThemes, the developer of Blocksy, has introduced six subscription plans for their theme. Unlike the top WP developers that sell their products without usage conditions, its Personal plan lets users build one website only. The Personal package is priced at 49 dollars per month. Unlike Blocksy, the GP Premium license lets you use GP Premium on up to 500 websites. If you want to use Blocksy on more than one website, you can purchase either the Professional or Agency subscription for 69 or 99 dollars. The Lifetime Agency, Professional, and Personal plans will cost you 299, 199, and 149 dollars. GeneratePress Premium Lifetime subscription costs 249 dollars.
